History of Anarchy in the Arena

All Elite Wrestling has had a total of two different "Anarchy in the Arena" matches. The Anarchy in the Arena match came about as a main event match for AEW's flagship pay-per-view Double or Nothing, after two successful years of hosting "Stadium Stampede" matches.

The Stadium Stampede match happened as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that put on the company in terms of having events in front of little to no fans. AEW took the disadvantage of being without fans and made it into an advantage when they had the first Stadium Stampede match in 2020. In 2021, with the pandemic still going on, AEW had a second one. By the time Double or Nothing 2022 came around, AEW no longer was hosting shows in front of little-to-no fans so it didn't make sense to have a third Stadium Stampede match.

Instead, All Elite Wrestling decided to have a Anarchy in the Arena match, which is basically a multi-team Empty Arena match, without the Empty Arena. The first one, at the 2022 Double or Nothing pay-per-view pitted The Blackpool Combat Club and friends against Chris Jericho and the Jericho Appreciation Society.

Match History:

  • AEW Double or Nothing 2022 (05/29/22): The Jericho Appreciation Society (Chris Jericho, Daniel Garcia, Jake Hager, Angelo Parker and Matt Menard) def. The Blackpool Combat Club (Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley) and Eddie Kingston, Ortiz and Santana
  • AEW Double or Nothing 2023 (05/28/23): The Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta) def. The Elite (Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) and "Hangman" Adam Page)
