History:

S.C.U. (Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian) were the first ones to hold the AEW World Tag Team Championship, having won the tournament to crown the inaugural champions in 2019


On June 18th, 2019, six months after the formation of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), a tournament was announced to crown the promotion's inaugural tag team champions. That same day, a 3-Way Tag Team Match was announced for AEW's event AEW Fyter Fest 2019 on June 29th, 2019, featuring Best Friends (Trent Beretta and Chuck Taylor), S.C.U. (Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky) and Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) with the winning team advancing to AEW ALL OUT 2019 for an opportunity at a first round bye in the AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament. Later, AEW's president and Chief Executive Officer Tony Khan announced that the tournament would occur on episodes of their TNT show, later revealed as AEW Dynamite. During the Buy In pre-show of Fyter Fest, Best Friends defeated Private Party and S.C.U. to earn their spot at AEW ALL OUT 2019.

FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) were the third set of AEW World Tag Team Champions. They held the belts for 63 days before loosing them to The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) 


The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) held the titles for a record setting 302 days



On July 11th, AEW's Executive Vice President and wrestler Matt Jackson announced a second 3-Way Tag Team Match to take place at AEW Fight for the Fallen 2019 on July 13th with the winners advancing to face Best Friends at AEW ALL OUT. At Fight for the Fallen, The Dark Order (Evil Uno and Stu Grayson) defeated Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) and Angelico and Jack Evans to advance. At the event on August 31st, The Dark Order defeated Best Friends to receive their first round bye in the tournament. 


Inaugural Tournament: 

The first official match of the AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament was announced on August 9th, 2019, with The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) facing Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) on the October 9th episode of AEW Dynamite in Boston, Massachusetts. It was later announced that the semifinals of the tournament would take place on the October 23rd episode in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the finals taking place on the October 30th episode in Charleston, West Virginia. On October 30th, S.C.U. (Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky) defeated The Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix) in the tournament finals to become the inaugural champions.

2. Kenny Omega and "Hangman" Adam Page - Won on: January 22nd, 2020 @ Chris Jericho's Rock 'N'Wrestling Rager At Sea: Part Deux: Second Wave in Nassau, Bahamas - Reign: 1, Days Held: 228 - Took place aboard Norwegian Pearl. Taped on January 21st, 2020 and aired the following day on tape delay.

3. FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) - Won on: September 15th, 2020 @ AEW ALL OUT 2020 from Jacksonville, Florida - Reign: 1, Days Held: 63

4. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) - Won on: November 7th,2020 @ AEW Full Gear 2020 from Jacksonville, Florida - Reign: 1, Days Held: 302 - This was a Last Chance March where if The Young Bucks had lost they'd never be able to challenge for the titles again. Additionally, FTR's manager Tully Blanchard was barred from ringside.

5. The Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix) - Won on: September 5th, 2021 @ AEW ALL OUT 2021 from Hoffman Estates, Illinois - Reign: 1, Days Held: 122 - This was a Steel Cage Match.

6. Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) - Won on: January 5th, 2022 @ AEW Dynamite: Premiere on TBS from Newark, New Jersey - Reign: 1, Days Held: 161

7. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) - Won on: June 15th, 2022 @ AEW Dynamite: Road Rager 2022 from St. Louis, Missouri - Reign: 2, Days Held: 28 - This was a Ladder Match.

--. VACATED on March 6th, 2024 (Darby Allin and Sting were the last champions. Sting retired following his last match at AEW Revolution 2024. Darby Allin appeared on the March 6th, 2024 episode of AEW Dynamite to relinquish the AEW World Tag Team Championship. A tournament will begin soon and will take place during the month of March to determine new AEW World Tag Team Champions)
