AEW Grand Slam Tournament of Champions 2022

In September of 2022, All Elite Wrestling held a tournament called the "Grand Slam Tournament of Champions" to crown a new AEW World Champion following the events of AEW ALL OUT 2022, in which newly won champion CM Punk got into a physical altercation backstage with members of The Elite (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson)) and was subsequently stripped of the AEW World Championship on the September 7th episode of AEW Dynamite.

At AEW ALL OUT 2022 in Chicago, Illinois two days prior, Punk had defeated Jon Moxley to become a two-time AEW World Champion. Following the event, during the post-show media scrum Punk made several comments about The Elite and the crew that hangs out with them such as Colt Cabana and "Hangman" Adam Page, which led to the two sides getting into a physical altercation backstage following the post-show media scrum. Punk was thereby stripped of the title, as was The Elite, who were stripped of their AEW World Trios Championship they had also won that night.

In order to crown a new AEW World Champion, AEW President Tony Khan announced on the September 7th episode of AEW Dynamite that there would be a "Grand Slam Tournament of Champions" that would be held between then and the annual AEW  Grand Slam show at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York and that on that night a new champion would be crowned.
